Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will meet with US Middle East envoy George Mitchell this week for the first time since indirect peace talks with Israel began on May 9, a senior Palestinian official told AFP on Sunday.

A US embassy spokesman confirmed that Mitchell was set to return to the region "within days" but could not give the precise time he would be arriving.
