Monday's meeting between Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch and Rabbi Tuvia Weiss, a senior haredi community leader in Jerusalem, failed to find a solution over the opening of a parking lot on Shabbat, Aharanovitch said following the meeting. The two had met to discuss ongoing haredi disturbances in the capital, such as Sunday's assault on a car carrying Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat. Haredi protesters angry over Barkat's decision to keep the Karta parking lot open on Shabbat surrounded the vehicle, struck it and threw a stone. Police reinforcements were called in to rescue the mayor. "At the moment, I can't point to progress. More meetings will be held... and I hope a solution is found," Aharonovitch said at the end of the meeting.
