United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the United Nations sent a congratulatory letter on Monday to the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on his presidential induction, according to Al Jazeera. United Nations spokeswoman Marie Okabe was quoted as saying that the letter was sent to congratulate the president on his induction but that the UN will not make a public congratulatory statement. The letter was not an endorsement of Ahmadjinejad, Okabe said, but the UN will utilize the occasion in the hope of continuing close mutual cooperation with Iran on regional and world issues.
