Al-Qaida leader, 17 others killed in Iraq jail clash

BAGHDAD - Eighteen people, including an al-Qaida leader and a senior Iraqi counter-terrorism official, died in a battle between inmates and security officers during a jailbreak attempt in Baghdad on Sunday, security officials said.
Huthaifa al-Batawi, known as al-Qaida's "Emir of Baghdad" and the alleged architect of a deadly attack on a Catholic church, was killed along with 10 other senior al-Qaida militants, said Baghdad's security spokesman Major-General Qassim al-Moussawi.
