A recount of votes in Nazareth showed that Ramiz Jaraisi, the incumbent mayor, lost to Ali Salam, a stunning development that puts an end to Hadash rule in Israel’s largest Arab town. “I repeatedly asked for a recount because I was sure that I beat the mayor by 400 votes,” Salam said. “From my point of view, Hadash rule in the city is over.” Jaraisi, however, said that it was premature for any side to proclaim victory, and that everyone should wait until official results are posted. According to Jaraisi staff estimates, there are between 10 to 21 votes separating the two candidates.
