Donald Nelson, a 59 year-old US citizen who had been sentenced to 110 years in prison for repeated acts of pedophilia, was arrested on Tuesday inside the Jaffa Gate Hostel in Jerusalem. He appeared in the Jerusalem District Court on Wednesday for a remand extension hearing, and police said his extradition process back to the US was now expected to begin. Nelson, who was apprehended by the special "Lahav" police unit, had grown a beard and long hair to disguise his identity, and was working at the hostel. A tourist visa that had been stamped inside of his American passport expired in April, and Nelson has been staying in the country illegally ever since. Nelson is a registered sex offender in the US, and became a fugitive after he was convicted on 52 counts of sexually molesting a minor and fled the country. Police were still investigating his whereabouts in Israel from the time he arrived until his arrest.
