Animal experimentation for medical research must continue, say leading academics

The presidents of the eight universities and seven Israeli Nobel Prize laureates last week called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to protect medical studies by continuing the humane use of animals for research. The academics said that using animals for this purpose are necessary for saving lives and must therefore continue.

The writers of the letter, led by Hebrew University president Prof. Menahem Ben-Sasson, noted that animal experimentation is carried out under strict supervision and used only when other means of conducting research are not possible.

The development of drugs and doing medical procedures to save people cannot be conducted without first testing them on animals, they said, noting recent pressure from animal protection groups to stop such research.
