EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton issued a statement on Wednesday voicing her approval of the previous day's meeting between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators in Amman, Jordan.

"I would like to express my deep appreciation to his Majesty the King of Jordan and Foreign Minister Judeh for facilitating this meeting in the framework of the Quartet statement of 23 September," Ashton said.

She encouraged Israel and the Palestinian Authority to use Tuesday's "promising" talks as a step towards creating "comprehensive peace."
