Assailant opens fire at headquarters of Paris newspaper

An assailant opened fire at thecentral Paris office of left-wing daily newspaper Liberation onMonday, seriously injuring one person before fleeing, a policeofficial and staff at the newspaper said.

The injured person was hit in the thorax, the official said,adding that the motive of the attacker, who was armed with ahunting rifle, was unclear.

"He walked in, fired twice and left," Liberation's editorialmanager, Fabrice Rousselot, told news television channel BFM TV.

Deputy editor-in-chief Fabrice Tassel said separately in atweet that the young male victim, who was rushed to hospital,was fighting for his life.

The mid-morning incident came days after an intruder enteredthe offices of the BFM TV channel, threatening journalistsbefore disappearing. Rousselot said it was not clear whether thetwo incidents were linked.
