Assange looks to contest Senate election in Australia

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Wednesday announced his intent to run as a Senate candidate in Australia's 2013 federal election, under the banner of a soon-to-be-formed "WikiLeaks political party," Australia's Northern Daily Leader reported.
Assange reportedly said that plans to register the new party have been "significantly advanced," adding that "a number of very worthy people admired by the Australian public" have expressed a desire to run in the upcoming election on the party ticket.
Assange has spent nearly six months in Ecuador's London embassy, after being granted diplomatic asylum on grounds he is at risk of extradition to the US to face charges arising from WikiLeaks' release of secret US military and diplomatic reports.
