Aug. 1 light plane crash which killed man in Eilat due to human error

The crash of the light Piper aircraft in Eilat on August 1, which claimed the life of pilot Yigal Breitman and injured the plane's two passengers, occurred due to human error, according to a report released by the Transportation Ministry's crash investigator, Yitzhak Raz.

Ahead of landing, the pilot had intended to switching the lever of the fuel pipes from the external tanks to the internal tanks, the report explained. In doing so, however, he accidentally closed the right engine fuel pipe by switching its lever to "OFF," thereby shutting down the engine temporarily.

Afterwards, the pilot opened both throttles to full power and because only the left engine was running, a sharp asymmetry caused the plane to turn diagonally and uncontrollably, rolling and plunging into the ground, the research determined.

Raz presented the initial investigative report to Breitman's family last week, and a complete version of the report will be released within a few weeks, the Transportation Ministry said.
