Austria's parliament has agreed to rehabilitate Wehrmacht deserters more than six decades after the end of World War II. The measure approved late Wednesday clears the names and reputations of men who were either killed by the Nazis or shunned by Austrian society in the aftermath of the war for having left the Third Reich's armed forces. The new law also nullifies convictions handed down by Nazi courts that, among other things, punished homosexuals or led to forced abortions or sterilizations. It also rehabilitates those who maimed themselves to avoid being drafted and those whom the Nazis accused of treason. The blanket measure, approved by the governing coalition and opposition Greens, was opposed by Austria's two right-wing parties.
