Ayalon meets UN Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon met with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Sir John Holmes on Monday. The two discussed the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, and during the meeting Ayalon presented Israel's humanitarian efforts in aid of Palestinians and the easing of restrictions in the West Bank.
They also discussed Israel's international aid program in times of emergency. Ayalon proudly stated that Israel was very active in times of crisis, citing the relief efforts in earthquake-stricken Haiti as a case in point.
"Israel was among the first countries to establish a sophisticated field hospital to treat civilians," he added.
During his visit to Israel, Holmes will meet with Noam Schalit, father of Gilad Schalit who was kidnapped by Hamas and held in Gaza for more than three years. Holmes is also scheduled to hold meetings in the Palestinian Authority.
