BOJ extends funds to banks in quake-struck northeast Japan

TOKYO - The Bank of Japan said on Sunday it has extended a total of 55 billion yen to 13 financial institutions in the quake-struck northeast of Japan since Saturday to help them secure enough funds to meet deposit withdrawals.

The central bank also said it will open all of its branches as usual on Monday.

"The BOJ will continue to do its utmost to ensure financial market stability and the smooth settlement of funds via steps including liquidity provision," it said in a statement.
