The only solution to the conflict in Syria is a political one, said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday in opening comments at the UN Gerneral Assembly.

In regard to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Ban said "we must recognize that the window is closing fast".

He added that the need to agree to a two-state solution would secure the "long-term interests of the peoples and the region".
