UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned on Sunday the Israeli plan to build 3,000 new settlements in East Jerusalem and in the West Bank, saying it would represent "an almost fatal blow to remaining chances of securing a two-state solution."

Ban called on Israel and the Palestinians to resume talks and intensify efforts towards a "comprehensive, just and lasting peace."

Ban also called on Israel to drop plans to build in area E1, that would essentially cut off access between the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
