Basketball: Hapoel J'lem, Maccabi Haifa both lose in Eurocup action

Hapoel Jerusalem fell to .500 in Eurocup action on Wednesday night with a 76-63 defeat to Lukoil Academic Sofia in Bulgaria that saw the Reds fall back to 3-3 in Group E.
Yotam Halperin (left) scored only six points for Hapoel while Josh Duncan led the visitors with 15 points in defeat as Jerusalem was held to just 30% shooting for the game. Alando Tucker’s 29 points paced Sofia, which improved to 2-4 with the victory.
Meanwhile, in a sentimental Group G game that started with a minute of silence to honor the victims of the plane crash that took place in Kazan just a few days earlier, hosting Unics had to wait until the final period to pull away and trounce Maccabi Haifa 79-58.
The win lifted Unics to a 6-0 record atop Group G while the loss halted Maccabi’s four-game winning streak and dropped its Eurocup record to 4-2. Kazan’s Andrew Goudelock led all scorers with 18 points, while Brian Randle paced Haifa with 17 points and Donta Smith (right) added 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in the loss.
