MAIDUGURI - An explosion killed at least five people and injured 10 others on Sunday at a bar close to a police barracks in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri.

"Five people have been confirmed dead while 10 others sustained various degress of injuries," Major General Jack Nwaogbo, commander of a joint police and military taskforce in the city, told Reuters.

Maiduguri has seen almost daily killings and a series of explosions in recent months blamed on Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect which say it wants a wider implementation of sharia Islamic law across Africa's most populous nation.
