Brig.-Gen. Nitzan Alon, former head of the IDF Judea and Samaria Division, will serve as the next head of the Central Command in place of Maj.-Gen. Avi Mizrachi who is expected to retire.

During his service as commander of the division Alon was singled out for criticism by the settlement movement, which felt that he was unfair in his treatment of settlers.

Chief of Staff Benny Gantz also decided Thursday to finalize the establishment of a new command that will be responsible for military operations deep inside enemy territory and outside of the boundaries of the regional commands.

Maj.-Gen. (res.) Shai Avital will serve as commander of the new command which will oversee special operations at times of war.
