British PM says Afghan withdrawal could start early as 2011

LONDON — British Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday the withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan could begin as soon as next year, but is dependent on conditions on the ground.
Cameron said in an interview with BBC radio broadcast on that "the faster we can transition districts and provinces to Afghan control, clearly the faster that some forces can be brought home."
He said he doesn't "want to raise expectations about that because that transition should be based on how well the security situation is progressing."
The war in Afghanistan is deeply unpopular in Britain, which has nearly 10,000 troops in the country, the second-largest contingent after the United States.
