As polls closed on the West Coast Tuesday night, CNN projected electoral wins for US President Barack Obama in  California, Hawaii, Washington, Iowa and Wisconsin, New Mexico, and for Republican Mitt Romney in Idaho, Montana and North Carolina.

The overall projections put Obama at 244 electoral votes, and Romney at 191. A total of 270 votes or more are needed to win the election.
