The Cabinet on Sunday approved the areas in which a year's free tuition at institutions of higher learning will be given to discharged soldiers and those who complete national civilian service.

The areas in which a year's free tuition will be given to the former soldiers include most of the Negev, the Galilee, Judea, Samaria and Ashkelon.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that this was an important decision that will contribute to both the educational development of discharged soldiers and economic development of the periphery.  "With this decision, we are both encouraging discharged soldiers and those who have completed national civilian service to acquire a higher education and strengthening communities in the periphery by drawing to these areas a stronger, better educated population."
