Clinton: US wants biting sanctions on Iran

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is vowing that the Obama administration will not accept a nuclear armed Iran and is now working on sanctions "that will bite" to press the country to come clean about its suspect atomic program.
In remarks prepared for delivery in a speech to AIPAC later Monday, Clinton says parts of Iran's government have become a menace to the Iranian people and the region. She says Iran must be shown there are "real consequences" for refusing to prove its nuclear activities are peaceful.
Clinton says if Iran developed a nuclear weapon, it would embolden terrorists and spark an arms race that would destabilize the Middle East. She says the building support for new UN Security Council sanctions against Iran is taking time but is worth the effort.
