Court cancels western part of planned Highway 9

The High Court of Justice decided Sunday to forbid the construction of the western part of Highway 9.
Highway 9 is meant to connect Highways 2, 4 and 6 in the area of Hadera. However, in response to an appeal five years ago by the Israel Union for Environmental Defense (IUED), the court decided that the western part of Highway 9 between Highways 2 and 4 should not be paved because the planners failed to properly provide alternatives to it as required by the environmental assessment. The judges decided that while the eastern part was essential for the development of Hadera and its environs, the western part would adversely affect the delicate ecosystem in the open spaces in the area.
IUED praised the decision, calling it one with "far reaching consequences."
