Dempsey says he has been asked to degrade Assad's military capabilities, not change the momentum of the Syria conflict

WASHINGTON - The top US military officer told Congress on Tuesday that he had not been asked to change the momentum in the Syrian conflict, but instead develop options to degrade Syrian President Bashar Assad's military capabilities.

"I have never been told to change the momentum. I have been told to degrade capability," General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US military's Joint Chiefs of Staff , told a Senate hearing.

Russia may hike military assistance to Syria should the United States strike, the US military officer told Congress on Tuesday, adding, however, that was not a reason in his view to hesitate to act.

"There is some indication that they (the Russians) have assured the regime that if we destroy something, they can replace it," General Dempsey said.
