Doctors optimistic about Gabrielle Giffords' survival

NEW YORK -- US Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords remained in critical condition at a Tucson hospital early Sunday morning after a gunman shot her in the head and opened fire at a political meet-and-greet outside an Arizona supermarket.
Doctors were optimistic about Giffords’ survival, with the Associated Press reporting that she was responding to commands from doctors after undergoing hours of surgery Saturday night.
"With guarded optimism, I hope she will survive, but this is a very devastating wound,"  Dr. Richard Carmona, the former surgeon general who lives in Tucson, told the Associated Press.
