Egypt's envoy to Israel: Two-state solution 'still available and possible'

The government in Cairo believes that a viable two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians is "still available and possible," recently-appointed Egyptian Ambassador to Israel Hazem Khairat said Wednesday at the Jerusalem Post Diplomatic Conference.

Speaking in Jerusalem, the Egyptian envoy said Cairo is committed to the peace deal it reached with Israel nearly 40 years ago.

"Frankly, I have to say the Palestinian state is one of the most pressing regional issues," said the ambassador who Egypt appointed to Israel this year for the first time since 2012.

Khairat stressed that the best approach to solving the decades-old conflict was through the Saudi-led Arab Peace Initiative that was endorsed by the Arab League in 2002. He added that Egypt hopes to work with the Palestinian Authority in order to help make "difficult decisions."

However, according to Khairat, the tensions in Jerusalem, increased Palestinian violence and Israeli outposts and settlements in the West Bank pose as a hindrance to achieving peace.
