Elderly man accused of mice abuse

The Agriculture Ministry has filed civil charges against an elderly man in his 70s for abusing mice until they died, the ministry said on Sunday. Owner of a pet shop in Or Yehuda, the defendant habitually placed mice into nylon bags after receiving them, and then froze them alive, according to the indictment.
Crowded inside the bags as they froze to death, the mice often ended with their eyes and legs bitten in the process, the Agriculture Ministry explained. Such behavior on the part of the defendant constitutes cruel and unlawful killing of mice and is in violation of the Animal Protection Law, the ministry said. The maximum penalty for violating the law is up to three years in prison or a fine up to NIS 202,000.
