European Council to Israel: Make gestures toward PA

The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers passed a resolution Wednesday calling on Israel to halt construction in West Bank settlements and to take conciliatory measures toward the Palestinians.
The panel also urged the Israeli government to cease administrative arrests of Palestinians, stop all demolition of Palestinian homes, and release Palestinian legislators serving prison sentences in Israeli jails.
Two Israeli members of Knesset who were present at the committee meeting in Paris, Labor’s Nachman Shai and Yesh Atid’s Ronen Hoffman, expressed disappointment over the decision.
“My colleagues and I are pressuring the Israeli government to enter into immediate negotiations [with the Palestinian Authority], but I expect that you in the European Council and all of its legislators will join the overall effort and pressure the PA to drop all preconditions for negotiations,” Shai said.
The committee resolution will be brought before European Council ministers for approval later this month.
