The family of Amir Rand, critically injured during a stampede at a 2001 soccer match, was awarded NIS 12 million by the Haifa District Court on Wednesday in compensation for the brain damage he sustained in the incident. As a result of the stampede, which occurred when fans stormed the pitch minutes before the end of Maccabi Haifa's championship match at Kiryat Eliezer, Rand suffered cardiac arrest after which he entered into a vegetative state. Eight years later, the young man, now 23, is still incapacitated and in need of constant care.
