Fire kills 12 in South African home for old, disabled

JOHANNESBURG - Twelve people were killed in a fire early on Monday at a center for the mentally disabled and elderly near Johannesburg, South African media reported.
The South African news agency SAPA said 34 people were also injured in the blaze in the town of Springs east of Johannesburg. It said the cause was not immediately known.
Last year, 18 people were killed when a fire swept through a retirement home near Johannesburg.
Such incidents have raised questions about safety standards and building codes in South Africa, the continent's biggest economy.
