First passenger airlines land at Ramon Airport in Eilat

The first two passenger planes landed at the newly-opened Ramon Airport in Eilat on Monday morning, The Jerusalem Post's sister publication Maariv reported.

The airport, which was opened for the first time to commuters early on Monday, is named for father and son, Ilan and Asaf Ramon, who were both killed in separate air disasters in 2003 and 2009, respectively.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Transportation Minister Israel Katz were expected to arrive at the airport on Monday morning, as the first two passenger planes landed at the airport.

Beginning mid-March, the port will become fully operational and will replace the main Eilat airport. The Ramon Airport is designed to hold up to two million passengers a year, with a planned expansion that will allow up to 4.2 million passengers by 2030.
