Foreign Ministry official: Swedish gov't using 'free speech' as an excuse

Foreign Ministry official responded harshly on Saturday to Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt's refusal to condemn a Swedish newspaper article which claimed that the IDF harvested Palestinian organs. "It seems that the use of the term 'free speech' is a comfortable excuse for the Swedish government to do nothing," the official said. Bildt said in a blog posted late Thursday that he would not condemn the Aftonbladet article, as freedom of expression is part of the Swedish constitution. "The general public in Israel, and in Europe, expects that a nation which holds such a senior position as the presidency of the European Union would say, courageously and directly, that anti-Semitism is despicable and should be condemned," the official went on, "not only when it comes from Teheran, but also from Stockholm."
