France's Hollande replies to Trump comments as he opens Paris farm show

French President Francois Hollande fired back at Donald Trump on Saturday (February 25) after the US president remarked in a speech that a friend thought "Paris is no longer Paris" after attacks by Islamist militants, as he opened the annual agricultural fair in Paris.

During a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, Trump repeated his criticism of Europe's handling of attacks by Islamist militants saying a friend "Jim" no longer wanted to take his family to Paris.

Hollande said Trump should show support for US allies, while criticizing America's gun control policies.

The outgoing French president was speaking at the Paris farm show, which is a major fixture on the country's political calendar, as it remains the European Union's number one agricultural economy and the marathon visits of presidents and candidates who come to shake hands and pat sheep are legendary.

Last year, Hollande was heckled by angry farmers during his a visit to the annual international agricultural show due to growing frustration and desperation by French farmers who said persistent low prices could have put thousands of farms out of business.

This year, he stroked cows, spoke of his enthusiasm for meat and sampled a variety of milks.
