Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason D. Greenblatt tweeted on Friday that "as Israelis work tirelessly on their northern border to treat Syrian refugees, Hamas works relentlessly to destroy Israeli lives."

Greenblatt went on to say that "today a young Israeli soldier was murdered by Hamas. Our thoughts and prayers are with that young man's family."

The IDF soldier was killed Friday afternoon after being hit in the chest by bullet fire from a Palestinian sniper in the Gaza Strip, according to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit.In response, the IDF struck 60 Hamas targets across the Gaza strip.

A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza was reached on midnight Friday.
