LOS ANGELES - San Jose State University in California placed a classroom building on lockdown on Thursday over reports that a man with a gun had been seen there, a campus police spokesman said.

The spokesman said the rest of the campus remained open while officers searched Sweeney Hall for a possible suspect. He said no further details were immediately available.

"Report of white male, all black clothes, possible handgun in Sweeney Hall," the university tweeted shortly after 10 a.m. local time. "Sweeney Hall shelter in place others stay out of area, rest of campus open."

San Jose State, located in the nation's technology hub of Silicon Valley, serves about 30,000 students as part of the 23-campus California State University system.
