WASHINGTON -- The US Senate voted to confirm Chuck Hagel as America's next secretary of defense in a 58-41 vote Tuesday afternoon.

The approval resolves weeks of delay and recrimination over the nomination, which Republicans initially held up over criticisms of Hagel's record on Iran, Israel and several other Middle East-related issues.
