The IDF Spokesman Unit said in an official statement that the military uncovered a "terror attack tunnel," adding that it was "neutralized in a controlled manner." "IDF units are securing, in a broadened manner, the Gaza border region to ensure the safety of residents," the spokesman added.

"Detecting the terrorism tunnel is the fruit of extensive efforts to defend and thwart [against this threat]... in cooperation with the Shin Bet. These efforts have gone on since the end of Operation Protective Edge," it added.

The tunnel was dug by Hamas to "carry out attacks in Israeli territory against Israeli civilians and security forces, and harm Israeli sovereignty. The IDF will continue to act to locate terror tunnels, through the various means that it has at its disposal to thwart terrorism against Israeli civilians," it added.

OC Southern Command, Maj.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, added that the recent detection is the result of "continuous, determined, and skilled work" by our forces.
