Iran's charge d'affairs to the United Nations has blamed Israel as the sole obstacle for "a Middle East free of nuclear weapons."

Speaking at a UN Disarmament Committee conference, Gholamhossein Dehghani said Israel's alleged nuclear arsenal and its absence among the list of countries that have signed the international Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) posed a barrier to ensuring nuclear weapons are not spread throughout the region.

“Israel’s opposition to the proposal that the Middle East free of nuclear weapons be this year’s conference in the final draft is the main cause of failure of the meeting,” Iran's Mehr news agency quoted him as saying.
