Iran's envoy to Turkey: Ankara's Israel-Syria mediation must go on

August 14, 2009 12:49

Following Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon's suggestion, citing the lack of success of Turkish mediation efforts, that Syria should deal directly with Israel, Iran's ambassador to Turkey said Friday that indirect talks could actually have better results and bring about greater flexibility on the part of Damascus. He said Syria wasn't prepared to drop Turkey as a mediator. Ayalon said in a Reuters interview on Wednesday that while Israel had enormous respect for the Turkish efforts, they had not succeeded because of Syrian intransigence.
