Israel’s delegation to the Rio Olympics continued to grow on Sunday, with Maor Tiyouri qualifying for the marathon in what was her first ever competitive race in the long-distance event.

The California-born Israeli set a time of 2:42.22 hours at the Ottawa marathon in Canada to become the 35th member of the Israeli delegation to Brazil.

The 26-year-old Tiyouri, who spent four years at the University of San Francisco, is the national record holder in the 5,000m, but chose to turn her focus to the marathon to improve her chances of reaching Rio and needed just one race to do so.

Shlomi Haimy effectively secured his place in Rio on Sunday, ending the cross-country mountain biking World Cup event in La Bresse, France in 65th position, three places in front of Rotem Ishay, his rival for Israel’s lone berth in Brazil.

Israel will be represented in an Olympic cross-country mountain biking competition for the first time after the national team earned one berth by being ranked in 22nd place in the UCI Olympic qualification ranking.
