Jerusalem woman arrested over Facebook incitement

A 22-year-old woman was arrested in the capital on Thursday for allegedly inciting to violence and terrorism over social media.

Jerusalem District Police said the investigation began after a Facebook post from the suspect’s account in which she “praised an attack carried out by terrorists” and “encouraged similar attacks in order to ‘free Jerusalem.’”

Additional posts of an inciting nature were uncovered starting in 2015 and shared by dozens of her friends on Facebook, police said.

“The 22-year-old woman was arrested for putting out information for incitement of violence using social networks,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. “This is part of the ongoing operation against people inciting over social media.”

The suspect was arrested on Thursday morning and underwent police questioning. As of press time police were seeking to extend her remand in the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court.

Police monitor social media activity in an effort to prosecute those who publicly support violence.

In early April, two east Jerusalem men were arrested for allegedly inciting over Facebook, and in December police arrested six east Jerusalem residents over the same suspicions.

Meanwhile, in January police arrested two suspects on suspicion of inciting against the panel of three IDF judges who convicted soldier Elor Azaria of manslaughter, for killing an already downed terrorist in Hebron in March 2016.

In a statement on Thursday, the Jerusalem District Police said they will employ “a heavy hand against those who choose to spread words of harsh incitement.”
