Knesset Law Committee to vote on civil marriage bill

The Knesset Law Committee is due on Tuesday to vote on the draft of a bill legalizing civil marriages in cases where both partners are registered as not having a religion.
It would mark the first time that Israel would recognize marriages that were not conducted in the religious courts of the recognized religions in the country.
Critics of the bill argue that it will solve the problem of only a small fraction of the couples who want to wed in a civil marriage, including couples of different faiths or couples in which one of the two members does not have a religion.
