Jerusalem mayoral candidate Moshe Lion's political patron Avigdor Liberman slammed incumbent mayor Nir Barkat in an interview in this weekend's Yerushalyaim newspaper.

Liberman said he had nothing good to say about Barkat and that the mayor had harmed everything he touched. He advised Barkat to return to his former career in hi-tech.

In the interview, Liberman denied that Lion's candidacy was the result of a deal he made with Shas leader Arye Deri.

The Barkat campaign responded that Deri had admitted that he was running Lion in public interviews and that Barkat's success was evident in every corner of the city.

Yerushalayim is the local weekly in the capital of Yediot Aharonot, a newspaper that has been unofficially promoting Lion, while rival newspaper Israel Hayom has been unofficially promoting Barkat, an ally of the newspaper's owner, Sheldon Adelson.
