Liberman promises humanitarian aid to South Sudan

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman promised the South Sudanese government humanitarian aid, mostly in the form of medical supplies, during a phone conversation Tuesday night with his South Sudan counterpart Barnaba Marial Benjamin.

According to a statement put out by Liberman's office, the foreign minister said Israel was a friend of South Sudan, and that he hoped that the internal strife in the world's youngest country would come to a speedy resolution.

Israel and South Sudan established diplomatic ties in July 2011, just two weeks after the country declared independence from Sudan. Just three days after Sudan declared independence, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke to the country's President Salva Kiir and said Israel would be happy to help the country in "any way."

Some 1,000 people have been killed in tribal violence that broke out in the oil-rich country on December 15.
