In a speech delivered to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron decried the "ever-growing" phenomenon of fake news.

"To protect our democracies, we have to fight against the ever-growing virus of fake news, which exposes our people to irrational fear and imaginary risk," Macron said.

Macron also referred obliquely to President Donald Trump, who popularized the phrase "fake news."

"And let me attribute a copyright for fake news, especially here," Macron said.
