Medvedev: Blaming Soviets for World War II is a 'cynical lie'

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday said anyone who lays equal blame on the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany for World War II is telling what he calls a "cynical lie." Medvedev spoke in an interview to be aired Sunday on state-run television before the 70th anniversary of the war's outbreak. Tuesday marks the anniversary of the 1939 Nazi invasion of Poland just weeks before the Soviet army followed. Soviet leader Josef Stalin had reached a nonaggression pact with Germany that divided eastern Europe into spheres of influence. Russia is embroiled in a dispute with its neighbors over the Soviet role in the war and has mounted a defense of the widely criticized pact with Hitler.
