Merkel: Germany would play no part in military strike on Syria

September 2, 2013 03:59

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday that Germany would not play a role in any military response to the apparent chemical weapons attack outside Damascus, The New York Times reported.

Speaking at an election debate against her Social Democratic rival Peer Steinbrück, Merkel said Germany would need an international mandate - whether with NATO, the UN or the European Union - before taking military action against Syria.
