Ministers okay domestic-violence plan

The Ministerial Committee for Combating Domestic Violence approved recommendation for a national plan to combat domestic violence. The plan suggests new ways in the fields of prevention, location, enforcement, punishment and rehabilitation of those who are involved in domestic violence in its different forms. The cost of the five-year plan is an estimated NIS 250 million.

The plan will include establishment of intra-ministerial coordination that will include opening regional assistance centers and a 24/7 hotline for women under threat; provisions for special target groups including Arabs, haredi (ultra-Orthodox), olim chadashim (new immigrants) and the mentally disabled.

“Family departments” will also be established in 15 police stations throughout the country.

A budget supplement for the “City without Violence” program will recruit Arab-speaking social workers at police stations in Nazareth, Taibeh, Rahat, Acre and Umm al-Fahm.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud), who heads this committee, said domestic violence is one of the harshest challenges facing Israel and the phenomenon should combated and eventually eliminated.
