US Middle East envoy George Mitchell met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday in New York in an attempt to save Israeli-Palestinian peace talks as the moratorium on West Bank settlement construction is set to end.

US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said that the US is also in contact with Israel and is doing everything in its power to keep both sides engaged in the talks.
